Project Counterparts Visit Japan in Context of Government of Japan-Funded Project “Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Industrial Development”

Japan Study Tour_3

TOKYO, Japan – International counterparts of the UNIDO project “Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Industrial Development”, funded by the Government of Japan, took part in a study tour and a series of industrial site visits last week to identify cooperation opportunities to implement climate-resilient and low-carbon solutions in African industries.

The project aims at creating awareness and demonstrating the opportunities and benefits of low carbon growth and climate resilient development in the manufacturing and related productive sectors in four African countries (Egypt, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa)  through application of Green Industry policy instruments and Resource Efficient Cleaner Production (RECP) practices and techniques.

In its final phase – currently underway – the project aims to demonstrate the benefits of adaptation technologies in factories in the food processing industry. Beneficiary companies and their technology needs were identified via technology assessments carried out in collaboration with  RECPnet members in each country.

The candidate companies and respective RECPnet members visited Japan for a series of meetings with potential suppliers, arranged by UNIDO’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) Tokyo, and took part in the International Food Machinery & Technology Exhibition (FOOMA) held at Tokyo Big Sight to find possible opportunities for business partnerships with the almost 800 Japanese technology companies represented there.

Numerous specific collaboration opportunities were identified, such as the provision of efficient air blowers for the tea processing sector, or the provision of biomass boilers for milk processing, both in Kenya; the provision of ice makers for fish processing in Senegal; and the provision of chillers with heat recovery functions for fruit processing in Egypt and South Africa.

In many cases, negotiations have already begun between beneficiary companies and suppliers. Agreements are expected to be in place by October this year, when a regional workshop will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, to promote the outcomes of the project.
