The First Symposium on Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Cleaner Production for businesses, was held on June 29 in Managua, Nicaragua. This symposium acted as a platform for knowledge management and actions to fight climate change. This event was an opportunity to exchange opinions, present expectations, challenges and opportunities on topics aiming to promote business competitiveness, domestic investment boost, taking into account issues related to sustainability, resource efficiency, and changes in habits in the energy consumption.
Different stakeholders such as the University Thomas More (UTM), the Nicaraguan Union for Social Responsibility (uniRSE), the Chamber of Recyclers of Nicaragua (CARENIC) and the Cleaner Production Centre of Nicaragua (CPmL-N) signed agreements and a memorandum of understanding to join efforts in the socio-economic and environmental development. These alliances show the commitment to work together in the management, dissemination and implementation of projects in the areas of corporate social responsibility, sustainability, competitiveness and productivity of businesses.
The event was supported by the MSMEs Green Initiative; a regional programme implemented by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and co-financed by the European Union through the Latin America Investment Facility (LAIF), BANPRO, the Pathways to Prosperity challenge of the US department of state and the German Cooperation (GIZ – COPLAN). The Symposium hosted presentations and exhibitions on efficient technologies aimed at industry, services, trade and agriculture companies concerned of economic and environmental benefits. The availability of existing funding mechanisms was also discussed as well as opportunities for reducing costs and improving the business competitiveness.
New products and services offered by providers of clean technologies were presented. Entrepreneurs and private companies could learn about the availability of finance mechanisms for the implementation of projects related to energy efficiency, renewable energy and environmental protection. Examples of strategic alliances between the public and private sectors of the country were also discussed. 150 people assisted to the symposium including representatives of the business sector, public and private institutions, independent energy consultants and suppliers of clean technologies.
